CHESTERTOWN — Harry Melvin Burton Jr. of Chestertown passed away on Oct. 5, 2018 at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. He was 82.
Born on Feb. 7, 1936 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Harry Melvin Burton Sr. and Frances Noble Harris. He graduated in 1954, from Princeton High School in Princeton, N.J. Mr. Burton worked with Chevrolet Motor Division as a service manager for 21 years. He owned and operated Burton Chevrolet from 1977 to 1984 and Cory Motors from 1986 to 2008.
In 1988, he married Mary Bailey. Mr. Burton was a member of the Chester River Yacht and Country Club, where he served on the board of directors and chairman of golf. He was also a member of the MISGA, the Chestertown Rotary Club and a member of the Kent County Chamber of Commerce, where he served as president in 1982. Mr. Burton enjoyed boating, golfing and his family.
In addition to his wife of 30 years, Mary Burton, he is survived by three sons: Robert Burton of Hartly, Del.; Harry Burton of Price; and Michael
Little Egg Harbor,
N.J.; three daughters: Cheryl
Burton of Abingdon;
Bonnie Burton of Chestertown; and Deborah Palmer of Rockville; two sisters: Frances Hackett of Southfield, MI; and Jacquelyn Forcier of Marlton, N.J.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of his Life will be held noon Oct. 13 at Chester River Yacht and Country Club.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Harry Burton Golf Scholarship, for a child to participate in the junior golf program at Chester River Yacht and Country Club, c/o CRYCC, 7738 Quaker Neck Road, Chestertown, MD 21620. Please denote that the contribution is for the scholarship.
