Prize-winning entries in Halloween parade
CHESTERTOWN — While there’s no definitive proof, a good bet is that Mother Nature masqueraded as a witch this year. She sure fouled up the Halloween parade here, bringing enough cold rain to delay the annual downtown procession of beauties and beasts and storybook characters.
Due to inclement weather, the parade was rescheduled from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon. There were not as many entries as usual, but the quality of the costumes remained high.
The parade stepped off at 3 p.m. from the Dixon Valve and Coupling Co. parking lot in the 800-block of High Street and ended in the 200-block of High Street, where a panel of judges representing various service organizations, Washington College and the Town of Chestertown sat on a raised platform.
The Chestertown Lions Club is the longtime sponsor of the parade, which for the last couple of years has coincided with the Sultana Education Foundation’s hugely popular Downrigging Weekend.
David Dunham, the current president of the Lions Club, was one of the judges.
Bob Knapp returned as the parade chairman.
Bill Blake was back again as the emcee.
Travis Hayman led the Kent County Community Marching Band, whose members “dressed” for the occasion in a variety of costumes.
Cash prizes in amounts from $25 to $10 were awarded to the place-finishers in various age groups, floats and groups.
