Rangers reliever Jeffress charged with drunken driving

-

Texas Rangers reliever Jeremy Jeffress, twice suspended in the minor leagues for violating drug rules, was away from the team Friday following his overnight arrest in Dallas on a drunken driving charge.

The club placed Jeffress, 28, on the restricted list, but general manager Jon Daniels said he expected the former Milwaukee closer acquired in a trade Aug. 1 to be back with the team Saturday.

Daniels said the American League West leaders were exploring the matter while Dallas police and Major League Baseball also conducted investigations.

A Dallas police spokesman said an officer made a traffic stop at 2:24 NOTES a.m. Friday and arrested Jeffress after “detecting a sign of intoxication.”

ROCKIES — Colorado called up Stephen Cardullo from Triple-A Albuquerque, the first time the 28-yearold first baseman/outfielder has been on an active major league roster.

Cardullo hit .308 with 17 home runs and 72 RBIs in 115 games for the Isotopes this season. Prior to that, he spent four years in independent ball and was the MVP of the Canadian-American Association in 2015.

The Rockies also optioned first baseman Ben Paulsen to Albuquerque.

DIAMONDBACKS — Arizona activated center fielder A.J. Pollock from the disabled list and optioned outfielder Mitch Haniger to Triple-A Reno.

Pollock, 28, an All-Star and Gold Glove winner last season, broke a wrist in a head-first slide in a preseason game two days before the start of the regular season.

BLUE JAYS — Toronto re-acquired veteran catcher Dioner Navarro from the Chicago White Sox for minor league left-hander Colton Turner.

Navarro, 32, spent two seasons with the Blue Jays before signing with the White Sox as a free agent in December.

RAYS — Tampa Bay will release outfielder Desmond Jennings on Saturday.

Jennings, 29, hit .200 with seven home runs and 20 RBIs this season. He has been on the disabled list with hamstring and knee injuries for all but five days since July 4.

He spent his entire seven-year career with the Rays.

TWINS — Minnesota selected right-hander Alex Wimmers’ contract from Triple-A Rochester, promoting its 2010 first-round draft pick to the major leagues for the first time.

Wimmers, 27, has a 4.04 ERA with 55 strikeouts in 55 2/3 innings this season between Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Rochester.

METS — New York plans to skip right-hander Jacob deGrom the next time through its starting rotation.

DeGrom, 28, who is 7-7 with a 2.96 ERA in 143 innings this season, gave up 13 runs on 25 hits in 9 2/3 innings in his past two starts.
