A’s keep adding to stacked bullpen with All-Star Rodney

ANAHEIM — Get ready to see imaginary arrows shot into the sky from the mound at the Coliseum soon.

The A’s have acquired reliever Fernando Rodney from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for minor leaguer pitcher Dakota Chalmers.

Rodney, 41 is still going strong in his 16th big league season. The right-hander has saved 25 games for the Twins this season and is 3-2 with a 3.09 ERA in 46 games. He continues to rack up strikeouts with 50 as opposed to 19 walks over 43 2/3 innings of work.

Having added Jeurys Familia in July and Shawn Kelley last week, Rodney is the third reliever the A’s have acquired over the past month as the club continues to build a strong bullpen in order to shorten games as much as possible with a rotation that has been pieced together with 13 different pitchers having made a start. The A’s bullpen currently holds the fourth-best ERA (3.28) in the majors.

The overall numbers look good for Rodney but his 1.40 WHIP, which ranks in the bottom half of relievers in baseball, is somewhat of a concern. This means Rodney is allowing over a runner to get on base per inning. But if he’s slotted into a lower-leverage fifth or sixth inning role as expected, that should help out his cause.

Rodney has become known over the years for his crooked hat, high velocity, which now sits around 94-96 mph, and unique celebration after completing a save as he pretends to shoot an arrow from a bow into the sky. He won’t be getting many save opportunities in Oakland, but expect the routine to continue.
