A steep slope makes for a challenging but beautiful and rewarding design.

With a wooded site on Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, Jill and David Rutter knew they wanted to build a vacation and weekend getaway that would capture views of their quiet lake cove and accommodate plenty of visitors and family.

Why a log home: The Rutters fell in love with logs when they helped Jill’s brother build his log home 35 years ago. “It’s the warmth you feel when you walk in and all the beautiful natural wood,” Jill says.

Most important features: An open floor plan with cathedral ceilings was a must for the couple. They wanted all the bedrooms to face the lake and have plenty of outdoor living spaces to soak up the views of the water. The couple specified wood for all the walls and ceilings. “We wanted this house to be different from our main home,” Jill says.
