Cindy Konz and Jon Roroff ’s search for land along the Mississippi River in Dubuque, Iowa, was challenging. “There were new, gated properties overlooking the river that were opening up at the time, but they were cleared of all trees and were just not our style,” Cindy recalls. Luckily, they happened upon a site on which the current owners were also planning to build a log home, but had found another site they liked better. Cindy and Jon jumped on the 60-acre tract.

Why a log home: Cindy and Jon had dreamed of a log home for 20 years, but during the design process, they opted to go with a hybrid — a mix of log and other materials that would simplify their maintenance routine.

Most important features: The couple and their two middle-school-aged children wanted a casual home to fit their outdoorsy lifestyle. The land, which features a hobby farm, hiking trails, hunting space and two barns, overlooks the river, so the new home would need to capture the view.
