In the 1950s and

’60s, segregated Birmingham was a flashpoint for the nation’s Civil Rights movement. The city’s Civil Rights Memorial Trail ( heritagetrail.birminghamal.gov) is a powerful reminder of the era. Visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute ( bcri.org) for an overview, then start your walking tour at Kelly Ingram Park across the street. The Memorial Trail continues past more than 70 sites.
