Oscar time in LA sees plenty of stars glittering in the limelight. But downtown, one luminary out-blazes the others: Gustavo Dudamel.
The 36-year-old wunderkind-turnedlegendary symphonic conductor grew up in the urban sprawl of Barquisimeto, Venezuela, graduated from that country’s innovative El Sistema musical education program, and, en route to his current home, managed to successfully invigorate the sometimes staid world of classical music. For now, he is delivering high notes and high praise as musical director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the seventh season running. 2017 will see him perform in Barcelona, Hamburg, Vienna… and back home in Los Angeles, where his star power shines all year.
