Os­car time in LA sees plenty of stars glit­ter­ing in the lime­light. But down­town, one luminary out-blazes the oth­ers: Gus­tavo Du­damel.

The 36-year-old wun­derkind-turnedle­gendary sym­phonic con­duc­tor grew up in the ur­ban sprawl of Bar­quisimeto, Venezuela, grad­u­ated from that coun­try’s in­no­va­tive El Sis­tema mu­si­cal ed­u­ca­tion pro­gram, and, en route to his cur­rent home, man­aged to suc­cess­fully in­vig­o­rate the some­times staid world of clas­si­cal mu­sic. For now, he is de­liv­er­ing high notes and high praise as mu­si­cal di­rec­tor of the Los An­ge­les Phil­har­monic for the sev­enth sea­son run­ning. 2017 will see him per­form in Barcelona, Ham­burg, Vi­enna… and back home in Los An­ge­les, where his star power shines all year.
