Top wit­ness pleads guilty in mob case

The star wit­ness in the gov­ern­ment’s case against a dozen al­leged Chicago mob fig­ures pleaded guilty to tak­ing part in a con­spir­acy that in­cluded 18 mur­ders.

Ni­cholas Cal­abrese ad­mit­ted that he took part in plan­ning or car­ry­ing out 14 of the mur­ders, in­clud­ing hits on Tony “The Ant” Spi­lotro, long known as the Chicago mob’s man in Las Ve­gas, and Spi­lotro’s brother, in 1986.

Cal­abrese is ex­pected to be the key wit­ness against brother Frank Cal­abrese Sr. and oth­ers charged in the Op­er­a­tion Fam­ily Se­crets mob in­ves­ti­ga­tion.
