Glen­dale po­lice in stand­off with gun­man at apart­ment

Glen­dale SWAT teams were in a stand­off late Fri­day with a man who had bar­ri­caded him­self in an apart­ment and then fled to the roof.

Ac­cord­ing to Glen­dale Po­lice Sgt. Tom Lorenz, the in­ci­dent be­gan when of­fi­cers pulled a ve­hi­cle over for a mi­nor traf­fic in­frac­tion. A male pas­sen­ger with a blood­ied face jumped out of the car and ran, Lorenz said.

Of­fi­cers pur­sued the man into an apart­ment build­ing in the 400 block of West Lex­ing­ton Drive near Pa­cific Av­enue. The man, who Lorenz said has a his­tory of men­tal in­sta­bil­ity, was next seen bran­dish­ing a ri­fle. He dis­re­garded po­lice or­ders to drop the weapon and bar­ri­caded him­self inside what po­lice said was his own apart­ment.

Lorenz said the man some­how made his way from the apart­ment to the roof, were he walked around while television news he­li­copters hov­ered.

Au­thor­i­ties evac­u­ated the build­ing and closed streets in the sur­round­ing neigh­bor­hood.
