Sen. Murkowski keeps panel post

Los Angeles Times - - 9• 23•10 -

Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska kept her position as the top Republican on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, despite her independent candidacy for reelection after losing the GOP primary last month.

Murkowski had already submitted her resignation as vice chairwoman of the Senate Republican Conference after losing the primary to “tea party” candidate Joe Miller.

But her peers declined in a closed-door meeting to remove her as the ranking Republican on the energy committee, out of respect for her tenure.

Meantime, the Tea Party Express said it would return to Alaska in about a week with a new ad campaign in support of Miller. The Sacramento-based group reported spending more than $550,000 to help him defeat Murkowski.
