The De­fense Depart­ment last week iden­ti­fied the fol­low­ing Amer­i­can mil­i­tary per­son­nel killed in Afghanistan:

Robert F. Bald­win, 39, of Mus­ca­tine, Iowa; ma­jor, Army. Bald­win was among nine troops killed Tues­day when a Black Hawk heli­copter crashed dur­ing a spe­cial op­er­a­tions mis­sion in the Day­chopan district of south­ern Afghanistan’s Zabol prov­ince, on the Pak­istani border. He was as­signed to Bri­gade Head­quar­ters, 101st Com­bat Avi­a­tion Bri­gade, 101st Air­borne Di­vi­sion (Air As­sault) at Ft. Camp­bell, Ky.

Michael J. Buras, 23, of Fitzger­ald, Ga.; se­nior air­man, Air Force. Buras was killed by a road­side bomb Tues­day in south­ern Afghanistan’s Kan­da­har prov­ince, on the Pak­istani border. He was as­signed to the 99th Civil En­gi­neer Squadron at Nel­lis Air Force Base, Nev.

Marvin R. Cal­houn Jr., 23, of Elkhart, Ind.; sergeant, Army. Cal­houn was among nine troops killed Tues­day when a Black Hawk heli­copter crashed dur­ing a spe­cial op­er­a­tions mis­sion in the Day­chopan district of south­ern Afghanistan’s Zabol prov­ince, on the Pak­istani border. He was as­signed to the 5th Bat­tal­ion, 101st Com­bat

Avi­a­tion Bri­gade, 101st Air­borne Di­vi­sion (Air As­sault) at Ft. Camp­bell, Ky.

Paul D. Carron, 33, of Char­lotte, N.C.; ma­jor, Army. Carron died of non­com­bat-re­lated in­juries Sept. 18 in Qalat in south­ern Afghanistan’s Zabol prov­ince, on the Pak­istani border. He was as­signed to the 2nd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Reg­i­ment in Vilseck, Ger­many.

Scott J. Flem­ing, 24, of Ma­ri­etta, Ga.; first lieu­tenant, Ma­rine Corps. Flem­ing was fa­tally shot Sept. 17 when his unit was at­tacked with small-arms fire while con­duct­ing pre-elec­tion se­cu­rity op­er­a­tions in south­ern Afghanistan’s Hel­mand prov­ince, on the Pak­istani border. He was as­signed to the 3rd Bat­tal­ion, 3rd Ma­rine Reg­i­ment, 3rd Ma­rine Di­vi­sion, 3rd Ma­rine Ex­pe­di­tionary Force in Ka­neohe Bay, Hawaii.

Ron­ald A. Grider, 30, Brighton, Ill.; sergeant first class, Army. Grider was killed by ma­chine gun fire Sept. 18 in north­east Afghanistan’s Kun­duz prov­ince, which bor­ders Ta­jik­istan. He was as­signed to the Army Spe­cial Op­er­a­tions Com­mand at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Joshua A. Har­ton, 23, of Beth­le­hem, Pa.; spe­cial­ist, Army. Har­ton was killed Sept. 18 when his unit was

at­tacked with rocket-pro­pelled grenades and smal­l­arms fire in Kaf­tar Khan in north­west Afghanistan’s Faryab prov­ince, which bor­ders Turk­menistan. He was as­signed to the 3rd Bat­tal­ion, 6th Field Ar­tillery Reg­i­ment, 1st Bri­gade Com­bat Team, 10th Moun­tain Di­vi­sion (Light In­fantry) at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Ti­mothy L. John­son, 24, of Ran­dolph, N.Y.; spe­cial­ist, Army. John­son died Sept. 16 in Kan­da­har, Afghanistan, of in­juries sus­tained when a road­side bomb ex­ploded near him in the Arghandab River Val­ley in south­ern Kan­da­har prov­ince, on the Pak­istani border. He was as­signed to the 1st Bat­tal­ion, 66th Armor Reg­i­ment, 1st Bri­gade Com­bat Team, 4th In­fantry Di­vi­sion at Ft. Car­son, Colo.

Bren­dan J. Looney, 29, of Owings, Md.; lieu­tenant, Navy. Looney was among nine troops killed Tues­day when a Black Hawk heli­copter crashed dur­ing a spe­cial op­er­a­tions mis­sion in the Day­chopan district of south­ern Afghanistan’s Zabol prov­ince, on the Pak­istani border. He was a Navy SEAL as­signed to a Coron­ado, Calif.-based SEAL team.

Jonah D. McClellan, 26, of St. Louis Park, Minn.; chief war­rant of­fi­cer, Army. McClellan was among nine troops killed Tues­day when a Black Hawk heli­copter crashed dur­ing a spe­cial op­er­a­tions mis­sion in the Day­chopan district of south­ern Afghanistan’s Zabol prov­ince, on the Pak­istani border. He was as­signed to the 5th Bat­tal­ion, 101st Com­bat Avi­a­tion Bri­gade, 101st Air­borne Di­vi­sion (Air As­sault) at Ft. Camp­bell, Ky.

David B. McLen­don, 30,

of Thomasville, Ga.; se­nior chief petty of­fi­cer, Navy. McLen­don was among nine troops killed Tues­day when a Black Hawk heli­copter crashed dur­ing a spe­cial op­er­a­tions mis­sion in the Day­chopan district of south­ern Afghanistan’s Zabol prov­ince, on the Pak­istani border. He was as­signed to a Naval Spe­cial War­fare unit at Joint Ex­pe­di­tionary Base Lit­tle Creek in Vir­ginia Beach, Va.

De­nis C. Mi­randa, 24, of Toms River, N.J.; petty of­fi­cer third class, Navy. Mi­randa was among nine troops killed Tues­day when a Black Hawk heli­copter crashed dur­ing a spe­cial op­er­a­tions mis­sion in the Day­chopan district of south­ern Afghanistan’s Zabol prov­ince, on the Pak­istani border. He was a Navy SEAL as­signed to Joint Ex­pe­di­tionary Base Lit­tle Creek in Vir­ginia Beach, Va.

Jaime C. New­man, 27, of Rich­mond, Va.; staff sergeant, Army. New­man was one of two sol­diers killed when an im­pro­vised ex­plo­sive de­vice det­o­nated near them Sept. 17 while they were on foot pa­trol in the Zhari district of south­ern Afghanistan’s Kan­da­har prov­ince, on the Pak­istani border. He was as­signed to the 1st Bat­tal­ion, 502nd In­fantry Reg­i­ment, 2nd Bri­gade Com­bat Team, 101st Air­borne Di­vi­sion (Air As­sault) at Ft. Camp­bell, Ky.

Joshua S. Ose, 19, of Her­nando, Miss.; pri­vate first class, Ma­rine Corps. Ose was killed Mon­day when his unit was at­tacked with small-arms fire while it was on foot pa­trol in south­ern Afghanistan’s Hel­mand prov­ince, on the Pak­istani border. He was as­signed to the 1st Bat­tal­ion, 8th Ma­rine

Joshua D. Pow­ell, 25, of Pleas­ant Plains, Ill.; staff sergeant, Army. Pow­ell was among nine troops killed Tues­day when a Black Hawk heli­copter crashed dur­ing a spe­cial op­er­a­tions mis­sion in the Day­chopan district of south­ern Afghanistan’s Zabol prov­ince, on the Pak­istani border. He was as­signed to the 6th Bat­tal­ion, 101st Com­bat Avi­a­tion Bri­gade, 101st Air­borne Di­vi­sion (Air As­sault) at Ft. Camp­bell, Ky.

An­thony J. Rosa, 20, of Swan­ton, Vt.; lance cor­po­ral, Ma­rine Corps. Rosa died Thurs­day while sup­port­ing com­bat op­er­a­tions in Hel­mand prov­ince, Afghanistan. He was as­signed to the 2nd Bat­tal­ion, 6th Ma­rine Reg­i­ment, 2nd Ma­rine Di­vi­sion, 2nd Ma­rine Ex­pe­di­tionary Force at Camp Le­je­une, N.C.

Adam O. Smith, 26, of Hur­land, Mo.; petty of­fi­cer sec­ond class, Navy. Smith was among nine troops killed Tues­day when a Black Hawk heli­copter crashed dur­ing a spe­cial op­er­a­tions mis­sion in the Day­chopan district of south­ern Afghanistan’s Zabol prov­ince, on the Pak­istani border. He was a Navy SEAL as­signed to Joint Ex­pe­di­tionary Base Lit­tle Creek in Vir­ginia Beach, Va.

Bar­bara Vieyra, 22, of Mesa, Ariz.; pri­vate first class, Army. Vieyra was killed Sept. 18 when her unit was at­tacked with rock­et­pro­pelled grenades and small-arms fire in east­ern Afghanistan’s Ku­nar prov­ince, on the Pak­istani border. She was as­signed to the 720th Mil­i­tary Po­lice Bat­tal­ion,

89th Mil­i­tary Po­lice Bri­gade at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Matthew G. Wagstaff, 34, of Orem, Utah; chief war­rant of­fi­cer, Army. Wagstaff was among nine troops killed Tues­day when a Black Hawk heli­copter crashed dur­ing a spe­cial op­er­a­tions mis­sion in the Day­chopan district of south­ern Afghanistan’s Zabol prov­ince, on the Pak­istani border. He was as­signed to the 5th Bat­tal­ion, 101st Com­bat Avi­a­tion Bri­gade, 101st Air­borne Di­vi­sion (Air As­sault) at Ft. Camp­bell, Ky.

Eric Yates, 26, of Rineyville, Ky.; first lieu­tenant, Army. Yates was one of two sol­diers killed when an im­pro­vised ex­plo­sive de­vice det­o­nated near them Sept. 17 while they were on foot pa­trol in the Zhari district of south­ern Afghanistan’s Kan­da­har prov­ince, on the Pak­istani border. He died of his in­juries Sept. 18. Yates was as­signed to the 1st Bat­tal­ion, 502nd In­fantry Reg­i­ment, 2nd Bri­gade Com­bat Team, 101st Air­borne Di­vi­sion (Air As­sault) at Ft. Camp­bell, Ky.
