Sam­sonov is hos­pi­tal­ized

Carolina Hur­ri­canes left wing Sergei Sam­sonov was taken off the ice on a stretcher af­ter crash­ing into the boards dur­ing Carolina’s 1-0 ex­hi­bi­tion vic­tory at At­lanta. The team said that he was taken to a hos­pi­tal for ob­ser­va­tion, but that he had no loss of feel­ing in any of his ex­trem­i­ties. Sam­sonov was tripped by Thrash­ers de­fense­man Dustin Byfuglien.

Terry Newton, a Bri­tish rugby player who had the first pos­i­tive re­sult for hu­man growth hor­mone in test­ing by a na­tional anti-dop­ing agency, was found dead at his home in Or­rell, Eng­land. He was 31. Po­lice, who went to Newton’s home af­ter re­ceiv­ing a re­port of con­cern over his wel­fare, said there did not ap­pear to be “any sus­pi­cious cir­cum­stances sur­round­ing his death.”

In Fe­bru­ary, Newton was sus­pended for two years for the pos­i­tive test.

Nor­man Pow­ell, a 6-foot-3 se­nior shoot­ing guard who helped lead San Diego Lin­coln to a Di­vi­sion II state ti­tle last sea­son, has com­mit­ted to UCLA. Pow­ell av­er­aged 19.7 points per game as a ju­nior.

Long­shot Cayambe led vir­tu­ally from start to fin­ish at odds of 25-1 to win Fair­plex Park’s mar­quee race, the $75,000 Ralph M. Hinds Hand­i­cap, by a neck in a three-horse photo fin­ish.
