Samsonov is hospitalized
Carolina Hurricanes left wing Sergei Samsonov was taken off the ice on a stretcher after crashing into the boards during Carolina’s 1-0 exhibition victory at Atlanta. The team said that he was taken to a hospital for observation, but that he had no loss of feeling in any of his extremities. Samsonov was tripped by Thrashers defenseman Dustin Byfuglien.
Terry Newton, a British rugby player who had the first positive result for human growth hormone in testing by a national anti-doping agency, was found dead at his home in Orrell, England. He was 31. Police, who went to Newton’s home after receiving a report of concern over his welfare, said there did not appear to be “any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.”
In February, Newton was suspended for two years for the positive test.
Tony Schumacher beat Shawn Langdon in the final round to win the top-fuel title at the NHRA Fall Nationals at Ennis, Texas. Matt Hagan (funny car),
Greg Anderson (pro stock) and LE Tonglet (pro stock motorcycle) also won their divisions.
Norman Powell, a 6-foot-3 senior shooting guard who helped lead San Diego Lincoln to a Division II state title last season, has committed to UCLA. Powell averaged 19.7 points per game as a junior.
Longshot Cayambe led virtually from start to finish at odds of 25-1 to win Fairplex Park’s marquee race, the $75,000 Ralph M. Hinds Handicap, by a neck in a three-horse photo finish.
