Levee failure forces residents to evacuate
Residents of a subdivision of the city of Portage in central Wisconsin were evacuated as a Wisconsin River levee failed because of flooding.
The Columbia County Emergency Management Office closed a road into the Blackhawk Park neighborhood in the afternoon, saying no one would be allowed in or out until further notice.
A county official said the levee had failed, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said on its website that emergency management officials had reported that the Caledonia-Lewiston sand levee just south of Portage — a city of about 10,000 people — was failing.
In Minnesota, Gov. Tim Pawlenty is due to meet state lawmakers on Monday to discuss the need for a special session to address flood relief for southern Minnesota.
