FBI ar­rests No­gales mayor

The mayor of the Ari­zona border town of No­gales has been ar­rested on pub­lic cor­rup­tion charges, in­clud­ing bribery, fraud, theft and money laun­der­ing.

FBI agents took Oc­tavio Gar­cia Von Bors­tel, 29, the mayor since April 2008, into cus­tody at his of­fice at No­gales City Hall.

Fed­eral agents car­ried out searches of his of­fice, home and busi­ness. The mayor’s fa­ther, Oc­tavio Gar­cia Suarez, 59, was ar­rested as well. He faces charges of fraud, theft and money laun­der­ing.

An in­dict­ment made pub­lic af­ter a five-month in­ves­ti­ga­tion ac­cuses the mayor of No­gales, a city of 25,000 peo­ple, of hav­ing so­licited lo­cal busi­nesses to use him as a con­sul­tant, start­ing in Fe­bru­ary 2009.
