FBI arrests Nogales mayor
The mayor of the Arizona border town of Nogales has been arrested on public corruption charges, including bribery, fraud, theft and money laundering.
FBI agents took Octavio Garcia Von Borstel, 29, the mayor since April 2008, into custody at his office at Nogales City Hall.
Federal agents carried out searches of his office, home and business. The mayor’s father, Octavio Garcia Suarez, 59, was arrested as well. He faces charges of fraud, theft and money laundering.
An indictment made public after a five-month investigation accuses the mayor of Nogales, a city of 25,000 people, of having solicited local businesses to use him as a consultant, starting in February 2009.
