Com­pe­ti­tion for­mat: One point awarded per match, 28 matches over three days, start­ing Fri­day. Europe needs 14 1⁄ 2 points to re­gain the Cup. The U.S., which won in 2008 at Val­halla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky., can re­tain the Cup with 14 points.

Team for­mat: Eight points are awarded Fri­day and Satur­day, from four­somes (two play­ers, each team, al­ter­nate shots) and four-ball (two play­ers, each team, each play­ing own ball, with best ball on each hole win­ning that hole for the team); 12 points will be awarded Sun­day in sin­gles play.

Brief his­tory: The U.S. leads the com­pe­ti­tion, played ev­ery two years, 25-10-2. It last won in Europe in 1993. The matches have been played since 1927. The Euro­peans didn’t win on U.S. soil un­til 1987. Since 1985, Europe has won seven of 12 matches, with one tie.
