Competition format: One point awarded per match, 28 matches over three days, starting Friday. Europe needs 14 1⁄ 2 points to regain the Cup. The U.S., which won in 2008 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky., can retain the Cup with 14 points.
Team format: Eight points are awarded Friday and Saturday, from foursomes (two players, each team, alternate shots) and four-ball (two players, each team, each playing own ball, with best ball on each hole winning that hole for the team); 12 points will be awarded Sunday in singles play.
Brief history: The U.S. leads the competition, played every two years, 25-10-2. It last won in Europe in 1993. The matches have been played since 1927. The Europeans didn’t win on U.S. soil until 1987. Since 1985, Europe has won seven of 12 matches, with one tie.
