AT THE PLATE: Collin Cowgill and Kole Calhoun hit home runs, Mike Trout doubled, and David Freese hit a two-run home run to deep center field in a four-run third inning, which ended Athletics left-hander Barry Zito’s scoreless streak at 13 innings. Josh Rutledge, who entered with a .170 spring average, caught a break in the fourth when his bloop to shallow right field fell for a three-run single.

ON THE MOUND: Setup man Joe Smith gave up four runs and four hits in the fourth, though Oakland’s rally was aided by a Luke Carlin bad-hop grounder that caromed off shortstop Erick Aybar for a run-scoring single instead of a potential double play. Smith also gave up a home run to Seattle’s Robinson Cano on Monday, but Manager Mike Scioscia thinks the sidearm-throwing right-hander will pitch better away from Arizona. “We saw a little of the same last spring with Joe,” Scioscia said. “Then we got back for the Freeway Series, and all of a sudden you saw that heavy sink on the ball. He’ll be fine.” Left-hander Jose Alvarez, who is closing in on a bullpen spot, gave up one hit and struck out two in two scoreless innings.

EXTRA BASES: The Angels got their first look at ambidextrous A’s pitcher Pat Venditte, who retired the side in order in the fifth inning by throwing right-handed to Daniel Robertson and left-handed to Matt Joyce and Marc Krauss. “I didn’t know it was him until I saw that his glove looked funny,” Scioscia said. “He was taking warmups from both sides. I said, ‘Wow.’ It’s pretty cool. I don’t know much about him, but it’s surely a talent.” First baseman C.J. Cron made a superb backhand diving stop of Bryan Anderson’s one-hop smash and flipped to Huston Street at the bag to end the third.
