“Goddess Sarasvati,” 1153 (1986)

Few medieval Indian sculptures are signed and dated, but this slender, voluptuous, pearl-bedecked Jain goddess of learning is: An inscription on the base tells us it was commissioned by a nobleman and carved by Jagadeva to replace a damaged temple sculpture. From a modern Western perspective, it’s fantastic to see knowledge portrayed as a seriously erotic woman rather than just a cartoonish sexy schoolteacher.
