UAB to bring back foot­ball

Alabama Birm­ing­ham Pres­i­dent Ray Watts said Mon­day he is bring­ing back the foot­ball pro­gram in 2016, re­vers­ing a de­ci­sion to shut it down be­cause it was too ex­pen­sive.

Watt said donors have pledged to make up the pro­jected $17.2-mil­lion deficit over the next five years if foot­ball is re­stored. Watts told the As­so­ci­ated Press he de­cided on Mon­day morn­ing to re­verse the ear­lier de­ci­sion af­ter meet­ings with UAB sup­port­ers con­tin­ued through the week­end.

Priest Wil­lis, a backup de­fen­sive back for UCLA the last two sea­sons, plans to trans­fer to an­other school, ac­cord­ing to a per­son with knowl­edge of the sit­u­a­tion who was not au­tho­rized to speak on be­half of the player or UCLA. Wil­lis, who has two years of NCAA el­i­gi­bil­ity re­main­ing, ap­peared in 12 games last sea­son, mak­ing one start.
