Thousands flee fighting in Syria

Los Angeles Times - - THE WORLD -

More than 3,300 Syrians have crossed into Turkey in the last two days, f leeing fighting between Islamic State militants and Kurdish forces in northern Syria’s Tal Abyad region, a Turkish official said.

The refugees entered Turkey at the Akcakale border crossing, said the official, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with the media. He also cited a U.S.led coalition airstrike in rural areas near Tal Abyad.

Kurdish fighters, backed by U.S.-led airstrikes, are closing in on Islamic State in Tal Abyad, taking towns and villages in the oil-rich swath in the country’s northeast.
