New York Yankees 8, Angels 7
AT THE PLATE: Yankees second baseman Stephen Drew, who entered with a .165 average, hit a two-run homer in the second inning and a solo shot in the sixth. Mark Teixeira hit a two-run shot in the third, his 17th homer of the season. Alex Rodriguez passed Barry Bonds for second place on baseball’s all-time runs batted in list with an RBI single in the sixth, giving him 1,997 career RBIs. Hank Aaron tops the list with 2,297 RBIs. Rodriguez also singled in the first, doubled in the seventh and singled in the ninth. Kole Calhoun had three hits and an RBI, and Matt Joyce had a double and a single for the Angels.
ON THE MOUND: Angels right-hander Jered Weaver, a fly-ball pitcher, and the new Yankee Stadium, with its short right-field porch and breeze toward right field, are not a good match. Weaver is 1-3 with an 8.71 earned-run average in five starts here and has given up 10 homers in 31 innings, including three that did not go beyond the third row of seats above the right-field wall Friday. “It’s not a fly-ball pitcher-friendly park, and for it to come down to three 315-foot homers is tough,” he said. “That’s why I haven’t had much success here. You get people out on their front foot and get them to pop it up, and it turns into a home run. Regardless of that, I need to do a better job of pitching here.”
LOW BATTERY: Weaver went 0-4 with a 6.29 ERA in his first six starts of 2015, four with Chris Iannetta behind the plate, but he went 4-0 with a 1.98 ERA in his next five, all with Carlos Perez catching. So why was Iannetta catching Friday? “We’re not in a situation right now where we’re looking to match up catchers,” Manager Mike Scioscia said. “If the trend continues, you’ll look at it a little deeper in the season.”
ROTATION SHUFFLE: Matt Shoemaker, who was skipped this weekend, will start Tuesday in Tampa Bay, and Hector Santiago will be pushed to next Friday against Oakland. Santiago will be available out of the bullpen this weekend, giving the Angels four left-handed relievers. The Yankees will start CC Sabathia on Sunday instead of Michael Peneda, who returned this season from shoulder surgery.
QUOTEBOOK: “I’m a baseball fan. When I want to see someone playing like Mickey Mantle, I can pull out the home movies. Or I can just watch this kid with the Angels, Mike Trout. Like dad, he’s got all the tools. He can run. He can field. And he can hit. Boy, can he hit.” — David Mantle, son of Mickey, to MLB Network.
UP NEXT: Right-hander Garrett Richards (5-3, 3.26 ERA) will oppose Yankees right-hander Adam Warren (3-4, 3.75) at Yankee Stadium on Saturday at 4:15 p.m. PDT. TV: FS1; Radio: 830.
