Firms asked about robocalls

Los Angeles Times - - BUSINESS BEAT -

New York’s attorney general has sent letters to EBay and PayPal telling them to explain provisions in their new agreements for users that authorize receiving robocalls.

Atty. Gen. Eric T. Schneiderman says consumer preferences for privacy and choice are protected by state and federal laws.

In letters to the San Jose companies, Schneiderman’s office said he wants answers by June 19 about their objectives, applications to affiliates and service providers, and how users can opt out.

PayPal said customers could choose not to receive autodialed or prerecorded message calls.

A spokeswoman said EBay looked forward to responding to the questions.
