WHERE THE PIPELINE FAILED
In this Santa Barbara County photograph from May 28, investigators measure and record the spot where a pipeline ruptured May 19, spilling thousands of gallons of crude oil into the ocean near Goleta. Hundreds of birds and marine mammals were killed. An engineer says photos of the pipeline show extensive corrosion and provide clues about the cause of the rupture.
