Rebels press Golan of­fen­sive

Syr­ian rebels launched an of­fen­sive against gov­ern­ment po­si­tions near the Is­raeli-oc­cu­pied Golan Heights af­ter shelling in and around Damascus killed at least 33 peo­ple.

Rebels of the South­ern Front al­liance and the Haramoun Army tar­geted sev­eral ar­eas in the Golan, in­clud­ing the towns and vil­lages of Quneitra, Khan Arn­abeh, Baath and Jiba and the base of Brigade 90, the main gov­ern­ment force in the re­gion, said op­po­si­tion ac­tivist Ja­mal Jolani, who is based in south­ern Syria.

The of­fi­cial Syr­ian Arab News Agency, mean­while, said two shells had struck Arnous Park in Damascus, killing nine peo­ple and wound­ing 13 as shop­pers were out be­fore the Mus­lim holy month of Ramadan, which be­gins Thurs­day.

Gov­ern­ment forces ear­lier fired Ira­nian rock­ets on the rebel-held sub­urb of Duma, killing 24 peo­ple, an ac­tivist group said.
