Washington quarterbac­k Cyler Miles retired from college football because of a chronic hip injury. Miles was suspended for the season opener last year but started 12 games, throwing for 2,397 yards and 17 touchdowns and with four intercepti­ons.

Mark Coyle, athletic director at Boise State since December 2011, was introduced as the new athletic director at Syracuse. He will replace interim AD Pete Sala, who took over for Daryl Gross in March. Gross, a former senior associate AD at USC, stepped down after the NCAA f inished an eight- year investigat­ion into the basketball and football programs.

Missouri defensive lineman Harold Brantley’s condition was upgraded to good after surgery on his left leg, injured a car accident Sunday.

With Tiger Woods missing the cut, U. S. Open TV viewership for the final round was down 30% from the last time the tournament was on the West Coast, with the f inal holes played in prime time in much of the nation.
