Los Angeles Times - - THE DAY IN SPORTS -

The Boston Red Sox placed second baseman Dustin Pedroia on the 15- day disabled list before Thursday’s 8- 6 loss to Baltimore, a day after he strained his right hamstring.

Pedroia was hurt rounding f irst base after his go- ahead, two- run single in the sixth inning of Boston’s 5- 1 victory Wednesday over the Orioles.

Pedroia is hitting .306 with nine homers and 33 RBIs.

Atlanta Braves right f ielder Nick Markakis saw his record streak of 398 consecutive games without an error end in the f irst inning of Thursday’s game against the Washington Nationals.

Denard Span singled to right field leading off and Markakis bobbled the ball, allowing Span to take second.

Markakis, who signed with Atlanta in the off- season, established the alltime MLB record for consecutive errorless games by a non- pitcher on June 18 — breaking the previous mark of 392, set by Darren Lewis from 1990 to ’ 94. Markakis had not made an error since Aug. 10, 2012, while with the Orioles.

The Angels acquired minor league reliever Kyle Winkler from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for f irst baseman/ outfielder Marc Krauss.

Winkler, 25, has split this season between double- A Montgomery ( Ala.) and triple- A Durham ( N. C.), compiling a 1.46 earned- run average in 10 games.

The left- handed- hitting Krauss played only 11 games with the Angels this season, hitting .143 with one home run and five runs batted in.

USC’s Garrett Stubbs won the Johnny Bench Award, awarded to the top catcher in Division I baseball. Stubbs, a senior, batted .346 and led the Trojans with 20 stolen bases.
