Putin vows his sup­port for As­sad

In a sur­prise meet­ing with Syria’s for­eign min­is­ter, Rus­sian Pres­i­dent Vladimir Putin pledged his sup­port for Syr­ian Pres­i­dent Bashar As­sad and called on all Mid­dle East na­tions to join forces to f ight Is­lamic State mil­i­tants.

Syr­ian For­eign Min­is­ter Walid Moallem met with his Rus­sian coun­ter­part, Sergei Lavrov, be­fore be­ing whisked to the Krem­lin for talks with Putin. The Krem­lin leader told Moallem that Rus­sia’s “pol­icy to sup­port Syria, the Syr­ian lead­er­ship and the Syr­ian peo­ple re­mains un­changed.”

Moallem said af­ter­ward that he was as­sured that “Rus­sia will con­tinue to help Syria po­lit­i­cally, eco­nom­i­cally and mil­i­tar­ily.”
