HILLMAN, Hon. Stephen J.

April 10, 1950 - June 5, 2017

-

Judge Stephen J. Hillman passed away on June 5, 2017. Steve, a kind and warm soul, is survived by those whom he loved dearly: his wife Lisa, his daughters Alison (husband Sam) and Lauren, his mother June, and his brother John (wife Leta). Their tight bond brought them years of loving and cherished memories, which they shared with their large extended family and friends.

Steve’s devotion to others was reflected in his unique ability to listen and enable those around him to feel heard. His generosity and humor inspire and will carry us forward for generations.

Steve’s principled and ethical way of looking at life was mirrored by his patient understanding and reflected his choice of profession. He committed nearly his entire professional life, more than three decades, to the United States District Court, first with the Office of the Federal Public Defender and then as a United States Magistrate Judge, including a tenure as Chief.

No words can express the loss of such a compassionate, wise and thoughtful man. We will miss him deeply.

Services will be held at Leo Baeck Temple in West Los Angeles on Friday, June 9th at 2:00 pm. The family requests that donations in lieu of flowers be made to the City of Hope, the Innocence Project of Loyola Law School, Leo Baeck Temple, or the charity of your choice.
