MOURNING AT PULSE NIGHTCLUB
People gather outside the Pulse nightclub Monday to mourn the loss of family members and friends in the mass shooting there exactly one year ago. The gunman, Omar Mateen, killed 49 people and wounded 53 others before being killed by police in a shootout a little after 2 a.m. on June 12, 2016. In 911 calls during the shooting, Mateen described himself as an “Islamic soldier.” It was one of the deadliest mass shootings by a lone gunman in U.S. history. A memorial service was held at the club to mark the anniversary.
