MOURN­ING AT PULSE NIGHT­CLUB

Peo­ple gather out­side the Pulse night­club Mon­day to mourn the loss of fam­ily mem­bers and friends in the mass shoot­ing there ex­actly one year ago. The gun­man, Omar Mateen, killed 49 peo­ple and wounded 53 oth­ers be­fore be­ing killed by po­lice in a shootout a lit­tle af­ter 2 a.m. on June 12, 2016. In 911 calls dur­ing the shoot­ing, Mateen de­scribed him­self as an “Is­lamic sol­dier.” It was one of the dead­li­est mass shoot­ings by a lone gun­man in U.S. his­tory. A me­mo­rial ser­vice was held at the club to mark the an­niver­sary.
