Stocking the Golden Knights
The NHL’s newest team, the Vegas Golden Knights, will have its roster filled today in an expansion draft, in which each of the 30 established teams will lose one player to the newcomer. THE POOL: Each NHL team submitted a list of protected players to the league Sunday morning, either seven forwards, three defensemen and one goalie, or eight skaters of any position and a goalie.
THE SELECTION: The Golden Knights have until 7 a.m. PDT today to submit their draft selections. They are required to select a minimum of 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goalies from the list of unprotected players, adding up to a minimum of $43.8 million in salary cap charges, or 60% of the 2016-17 season salary cap of $73 million. At least 20 of the players selected must already be under contract for the 2017-18 season.
THE REVEAL: The Golden Knights’ selections will be announced during the NHL Awards show tonight at 5 p.m. from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (TV: NBCSN).
