State bud­get dead­line nears

Fri­day is the dead­line for Gov. Jerry Brown to en­act a bud­get for 201718. The gov­er­nor is con­sid­er­ing a $183-bil­lion bud­get sent to him by the Leg­is­la­ture that broadly boosts spend­ing while con­tin­u­ing the re­cent ef­fort to build up cash re­serves. The bud­get sets aside $106 bil­lion for health­care and $74.5 bil­lion for K-12 schools and the state’s vast net­work of com­mu­nity col­leges.
