Arena bolsters roster
A day after the U.S. won its group in the CONCACAF Gold Cup soccer tournament, coach Bruce Arena made six changes to his 23-man roster ahead of Wednesday’s quarterfinal game in Philadelphia against El Salvador.
Goalkeepers Tim Howard and Jesse Gonzalez, midfielders Michael Bradley and Darlington Nagbe, and forwards Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey join the roster. Gone are goalkeepers Brad Guzan and Sean Johnson; midfielders Alejandro Bedoya, Cristian Roldan and Kelyn Rowe; and forward Dom Dwyer.
Group play ended Sunday night as Mexico beat Curacao 2-0 in San Antonio to win Group C. Jamaica beat El Salvador 1-0 in Sunday’s earlier match, but both advanced based on match points.
The U.S.- El Salvador game will follow Wednesday’s opener in Philadelphia, Costa Rica versus Panama. On Thursday at Glendale, Ariz., Mexico faces Honduras and Jamaica plays Canada. The Philadelphia winners meet Saturday at Arlington, Texas, and the Arizona winners play Sunday at the Rose Bowl.
The final is July 26 at Santa Clara.
