SUS­PECT IN COUP AT­TEMPT

For­mer Turk­ish air force com­man­der Akin Oz­turk, in hand­cuffs, and other de­fen­dants ac­cused of par­tic­i­pat­ing in a failed coup at­tempt last sum­mer were led to court hear­ings on Tues­day in Ankara. Nearly 500 sus­pects, in­clud­ing generals and mil­i­tary pi­lots, went on trial, ac­cused of try­ing to over­throw the gov­ern­ment and of car­ry­ing out at­tacks from an air base in the cap­i­tal. The Penn­syl­va­nia-based cleric Fethul­lah Gulen, whom the Turk­ish gov­ern­ment blames for the in­sur­rec­tion, has been named as the main de­fen­dant in the case and will be tried in ab­sen­tia. Gulen has de­nied in­volve­ment in the coup at­tempt.
