SUSPECT IN COUP ATTEMPT
Former Turkish air force commander Akin Ozturk, in handcuffs, and other defendants accused of participating in a failed coup attempt last summer were led to court hearings on Tuesday in Ankara. Nearly 500 suspects, including generals and military pilots, went on trial, accused of trying to overthrow the government and of carrying out attacks from an air base in the capital. The Pennsylvania-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom the Turkish government blames for the insurrection, has been named as the main defendant in the case and will be tried in absentia. Gulen has denied involvement in the coup attempt.
