Clippers’ Reed arrested after incident with wife
Newly signed Clippers center Willie Reed was arrested early Sunday morning in Miami on suspicion of domestic violence. Reed, 27, was jailed for misdemeanor battery in downtown Miami at a condominium complex, according to a police report.
The Clippers released a statement saying the team was “working to determine the facts” of the incident.
Reed’s attorney, David Oscar Markus, said, “Willie will continue to cooperate with the authorities, the Clippers, and with the league so that they have all of the facts regarding this misdemeanor allegation.”
Reed’s wife told police an argument started when she told her husband she wanted a divorce. She said she was knocked to the ground while struggling over her purse and dragged around the apartment until the strap broke. She alleged Reed tore her shirt as she went to the lobby of the apartment building to tell the concierge, then returned to get her two children. She told police that Reed grabbed her by the hair and twisted her arm as she tried to exit the apartment with her youngest son.
Reed told police that he never put his hands on his wife, but acknowledged grabbing her shirt and her purse, according to the police report.
The Clippers recently signed the 6foot-11 Reed to a one-year, $1.5-million deal. He was a backup last season for the Miami Heat.
