Fed­erer reaches fi­nal

Roger Fed­erer con­tin­ued his long­est win­ning streak in five years by reach­ing the Rogers Cup fi­nal. The sec­ond-seeded Fed­erer used a 6-3, 7-6 (5) vic­tory over Robin Haase of the Nether­lands in Mon­treal to reach his sixth fi­nal of the year and win his 16th con­sec­u­tive match. In Sun­day’s fi­nal he will face Ger­many’s Alexan­der Zverev, who beat Cana­dian teenager De­nis Shapo­valov 6-4, 7-5.

In Toronto, Caro­line Woz­ni­acki cruised into the Rogers Cup fi­nal with a 6-2, 6-3 vic­tory over Sloane Stephens. Woz­ni­acki, the No. 6 seed from Den­mark, will play Elina Svi­tolina of Ukraine, who beat Ro­ma­nia’s Si­mona Halep 6-1, 6-1 in Sun­day’s fi­nal.

Sam Hor­nish Jr. dom­i­nated in his home state to win the Xfinity MidOhio Chal­lenge. Hor­nish, from De­fi­ance, Ohio, took the lead from rookie Daniel Hem­ric on lap 62 of 75 af­ter the sev­enth cau­tion at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lex­ing­ton. Hor­nish beat Hem­ric by 1.335 sec­onds for his fifth vic­tory in 117 Xfinity races. Rookie Matt Tifft, a Hinck­ley, Ohio, na­tive was third.

In his first NASCAR Truck Se­ries race in three years, Dar­rell Wal­lace Jr. looked as if he had never left.

Wal­lace held off a late chal­lenge from Christo­pher Bell to win at Michi­gan In­ter­na­tional Speed­way in Brook­lyn. Af­ter tak­ing the lead in his No. 99 Chevro­let with about 10 laps re­main­ing, Wal­lace had to con­tend with Austin Cin­dric and Bell to­ward the end. He edged Bell by 0.176 sec­onds.
