EGYPTIAN FESTIVAL 2017
Ripon event is Friday through Sunday
St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church hosts festival
St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church in Ripon is celebrating Egyptian Festival 17 this Friday through Sunday.
What’s new is that the only fundraiser at the church located at 315 S. Orange Ave. is usually held after the International Egyptian weather. Festival scheduled on the first weekend in October.
“We’re doing it before the International Festival,” said George Benjamin, who is the treasurer at St. Mark’s.
The reason for that is
In the past, organizers of the local Egyptian Festival had to deal with cold and wet conditions. “This is the first year we’re trying it this early,” said Benjamin of the three-day event that begins on Friday, from 4 to 8 p.m. “This is an indoor / outdoor festival.”
Featured again at this admission-free event will be tasty Egyptian dishes – falafel, beef
shawarma, stuffed grape leaves, gyros, and kebabs, to name a few.
“We even have something for people who are vegetarians,” said Benjamin.
For the sweet tooth, there’s baklava and other treats.
Benjamin and others will share the history of the church and provide a tour of the premises. Downstairs, for example, is a boutique featuring traditional Egyptian garb not to mention books and statues.
The Egyptian Festival will offer fun activities such as henna tattoos, face painting, and games.
Live music and traditional dancing is another staple of the festival, which is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
“We get people from all over (to Ripon) including those from San Francisco,” Benjamin said.
