St. Mark’s Cop­tic Or­tho­dox Church hosts fes­ti­val

St. Mark’s Cop­tic Or­tho­dox Church in Ripon is cel­e­brat­ing Egyp­tian Fes­ti­val 17 this Fri­day through Sun­day.

What’s new is that the only fundraiser at the church lo­cated at 315 S. Or­ange Ave. is usu­ally held af­ter the In­ter­na­tional Egyp­tian weather. Fes­ti­val sched­uled on the first week­end in Oc­to­ber.

“We’re do­ing it be­fore the In­ter­na­tional Fes­ti­val,” said Ge­orge Ben­jamin, who is the trea­surer at St. Mark’s.

The rea­son for that is

In the past, or­ga­niz­ers of the lo­cal Egyp­tian Fes­ti­val had to deal with cold and wet con­di­tions. “This is the first year we’re try­ing it this early,” said Ben­jamin of the three-day event that be­gins on Fri­day, from 4 to 8 p.m. “This is an in­door / out­door fes­ti­val.”

Fea­tured again at this ad­mis­sion-free event will be tasty Egyp­tian dishes – falafel, beef

shawarma, stuffed grape leaves, gy­ros, and ke­babs, to name a few.

“We even have some­thing for peo­ple who are veg­e­tar­i­ans,” said Ben­jamin.

For the sweet tooth, there’s baklava and other treats.

Ben­jamin and oth­ers will share the his­tory of the church and pro­vide a tour of the premises. Down­stairs, for ex­am­ple, is a bou­tique fea­tur­ing tra­di­tional Egyp­tian garb not to men­tion books and stat­ues.

The Egyp­tian Fes­ti­val will of­fer fun ac­tiv­i­ties such as henna tat­toos, face paint­ing, and games.

Live mu­sic and tra­di­tional danc­ing is an­other sta­ple of the fes­ti­val, which is sched­uled from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Satur­day, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sun­day.

“We get peo­ple from all over (to Ripon) in­clud­ing those from San Fran­cisco,” Ben­jamin said.
