The City of Ripon is thankful for Rick Van Unen.

He recently led the fundraising efforts to help Ripon police purchase an out-fitted patrol unit.

“Rick is a valuable asset to the community,” said Ripon Councilman Michael Restuccia at Tuesday’s monthly meeting. “He’s honorable and a good person.”

Van Unen contacted police Chief Ed Ormonde in July of a unique opportunity

involving two dozen or so local businesses and community members.

In a very short time, they were able collect $51,650, surpassing the goal of $51,000.

It was Van Unen’s awareness of the aging patrol fleet, keeping with the department’s strategy and implementation for replacing its current vehicles, according to Ormonde.

“I hope we’re careful how we spread out the purchases (of patrol cars),” said Councilman Leo Zuber, pointing out that six of the current aging vehicles were bought in 2004.

This year, police have already purchased three patrol units.

Plans call for the vehicle made possible from the recent donation will be an addition to any planned future purchases. “(It) would not supplant any of the City’s scheduled purchases,” Ormonde said.

The City would also be responsible for the expense of routine maintenance and upkeep of this vehicle.
