BERMUDA TRIPLE CROWN
July, Hamilton, Bermuda The Fa-La-Me team, led by owner Frank Rodriguez and Capt. Rob Moore, won the 2017 Bermuda Triple Crown, making them the first three-time winner of the series. Legasea finished in second place, and Galatea, with Capt. Ritchie Howell at the helm, won third place.
SOUTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR’S CUP BILLFISHING SERIES
May-July, South Carolina Capt. Chucky Moore and boat owner Colby Griffin led the Gryphon team to victory in the 2017 South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series. The team released eight blue marlin and 13 sailfish over the course of the five-tournament series. Mister Pete, owned by Bob and Rusty McClam and captained by Alan Neiford, was second with four blue marlin and 16 sailfish, and Toast, with owner Ron Martin and Capt. Newt Cagle, finished in third place with five blues and 12 sailfish.
THE BIG ROCK BLUE MARLIN TOURNAMENT
June 10-17, Morehead City, North Carolina The Run-Off team of Capt. Brian Harrington, mate Marty Hiatt and angler Matt Hanley teamed up to win a record payout of $1,161,450 in this year’s event with their 533.8-pound blue marlin. Rehab, a 48-foot Viking captained by Nathan Shepard, weighed a 506-pound blue marlin to finish in second place, worth $250,720. Weldor’s Ark, a 55-foot Jarrett Bay, was third with a 484.9-pound blue marlin, good for $166,480.
