What’s the most eco-friendly way to dispose of fallen leaves in my yard?

Martha Stewart Living - - Contents - —Daria Marlowe, Shaker Heights, Ohio

The quickest (and completely bag-free) method is to mow them into your grass; use the “mulch” setting on your lawn mower if it has one. You’ll create a nutrient-rich mixture that will help feed your lawn come spring. If you want to take matters a step further, rake the leaves into a bag or a fenced metal or wooden bin, then leave them to mature for at least a year—much like compost—into leaf mold, which is excellent to spread on your garden in future seasons.
