New La Plata library needed
On March 23, the Maryland Independent published an article about the county’s capital improvement plan. One item on that plan is a replacement for the Charles County Public Library’s branch in La Plata. The La Plata branch has served the county well, but it has seen better days. There’s not enough parking. The floor shakes when the blowers run. The computer area is crowded. There’s not enough room for community events. And the restrooms are ... well ... enough said.
The Waldorf West branch is a hint of what we could have in La Plata: a bright, friendly space with plenty of room for all kinds of fun things to do. The Town of La Plata is supportive, and we’ve heard interest from some of the commissioners. But what matters most is support from members of the community.
Replacing the current building will not be cheap. But we’ll reap the benefits for many years to come. Our libraries are so much more than “just books.” Replacing the La Plata branch will enable us to offer even more to area residents, whether you’re a reader or not. For those reasons, a building for the library will help build Charles County’s future.
