This tight, experienced team will be motivated to claim what it feels is there’s. Lackey will have a strong showing in the sprints and hurdles. Weaknesses: The boys team isn’t as experienced as the girls and will need contributions all around. The girls can use a boost in the distance events. Behind Reese, the girls are particularly strong in the hurdles and jumping events. Weaknesses: The Warriors will continue to search for success in the sprints to supplement what it’s likely to do in the other events. Head coach: Carlos Bell (first season) Last year: Boys — 2-11 (tied for 12th in SMAC with Lackey, 14th at SMAC championships, eighth at Class 1A North Region championships); Girls — 0-13 (14th in SMAC, 14th at SMAC championships, sixth at Class 1A North region championships) Athletes to watch: Boys — S/R Dorrien Lewis (Sr., All-SMAC, AllCounty); Girls — S Elizabeth Hicks (So.) The strength will fall in being a strong unit as a team and how the young runners step up to the challenge during competitive meets. On the girls side, North Point has a few seniors who will be competing in their final seasons and are working hard to set their goals for the end of the season. The Eagles are deep in a few events, which will help them in the postseason level meets. Relays will also will be a strong asset.

The boys have a lot of young athletes on the team, so the future is very bright for the program. With a large number of freshmen, the girls side is not sure which event they will be competing in at the end of the season, so the coaching staff is teaching some of the younger athletes the field events and hurdles. championships; Girls — Third at Maryland Independent Schools Athletic League Championships. Athletes to watch: Boys — Stephen Larsen (Jr.); Girls — Jordan Mitchell (Jr.) Key personnel losses: None Strengths: Mitchell is in her first year as the head coach, but has been around the team in the past. She said Southern Maryland Christian has good group of kids and a team larger than in year’s past. Even with a bigger team, the chemistry is good amongst the athletes, many of whom played other sports with one another. There’s a good team atmosphere. Weaknesses: Many of the athletes are newcomers to the sport of track and field. This will be the case across the board, as far the events are concerned. The Mustangs will be learning as they compete. Head coach: Chris McAllister (second season) Last year: Boys — 0-13 (14th in SMAC, 13th at SMAC championships, ninth at Class 2A South Region championships); Girls — 4-9 (tied for ninth in SMAC with La Plata and Thomas Stone, 11th at SMAC championships, ninth at Class 2A South Region championships) Athletes to watch: Boys — D Jason Tyler (Sr.), J Sherrod Frye (Fr.), T Justin Boulware (Sr.), D Reginald Briscoe (Sr.), S DaMario Carroll (Sr.); Girls — H Brianne Gunn (Fr.), S Jessica Hightower (Sr.), T Kemah Brown (So.), H Madisyn Clark (So.), S Nia Francois (So.) Key personnel losses: Boys — None; Girl — J Kiara Stephens (Fr., transferred) Strengths: In boys, the middle distance events are going to be strong with the addition of Carroll to an already good crew of Briscoe and Tyler. Tyler comes into the spring having won two state indoor titles in the 500- and 800-meter events. Strong intermediate hurdlers and jumpers should help score some points at the bigger meets for the Spartans. On the girls team, the Spartans have great additions to the field events with Clark and Brown that will help them out this season. Also their middle distance crew has been strengthened by some Weaknesses: In boys, the field events will be a focal point for most of the season as all participants are young or new to track. Relays being able to transition through exchange zones with ease and confidence. In girls, horizontal jumps and long distance will be some areas of focus for the team, also the building of confidence. Head coach: Katie Coverdale (second season) Last year: Boys — 8-5 (tied for sixth in SMAC with Leonardtown, sixth at SMAC championships, second at Class 3A South Region championships, tied for 18th at Class 3A state championships); Girls — 4-9 (tied for ninth in SMAC with La Plata and St. Charles, seventh at SMAC championships, eighth at Class 3A South Region championships, tied for 18th at Class 3A state championships) Athletes to watch: Boys — S Aaron Holliday (Sr., All-County), D Billy Burch (Sr., All-County), H Sadiq Rose (Sr.), S/R Justin Greene (Sr.), S/R Randy Brent (Sr.), J/R Demetri Morsell (Jr.); Girls — S/D Mon’et Peterson (Jr., All-SMAC, All-County), D Asia Fort (Sr.) Key personnel losses: Boys — S/R Michael Dorsey (All-County), S/R Juwan Gray (All-County), S/R Isaiah Fluker (All-County, S/R Jalen Jackson (All-County), S/R Juwuan Briscoe; Girls — H/R Jada Jackson (All-SMAC. All-County) Strengths: On the boys side, Stone will be very strong in the sprinting events and the relays, while the girls will also be very stalwart in the relays and mid-stance events. The indoor season provided the kids with a good experience going into the outdoors along with much-needed confidence with several state qualifiers during indoor, including a state champion in Holliday, who captured gold in the 55 dash. Weaknesses: The Cougars are going to have to get into excellent shape because they have lower numbers this year. Athletes are going to be spread thin when it comes to competing in events. The field event performances will also be crucial to the success of the team as Stone has the potential to score a lot of points in those categories. Head coach: Beth Shook (15th season, All-SMAC boys COY, All-County boys COY) Last year: Boys —13-0 (SMAC regular season champion, SMAC championships champion, Class 3A South Region championships champion; Class 3A state championships champion); Girls — 7-6 (seventh in SMAC, fifth at SMAC championships, fifth at class 3A South Region championships, sixth at Class 3A state championships) Athletes to watch: Boys — H/S/R Ja’Len Elliott (Sr., All-SMAC, AllCounty), S/J/R Thomas Alcorn (Jr. , AllSMAC, All-County), S/R Will Moten (Jr., All-SMAC, All-County AOY), J/R Tobias Hurley (Jr.), J Nnamdi Chandler (Sr.), D Jay Hall (So., All-County) D Jett Hall (So.), T Kyle Knottage (Jr., All-County); Girls — D Skye Cummings (Jr., AllCounty), S Brianna Edmonds (Sr.), D/R Kennedeigh Hairston (Sr., All-County), S/R Jordan Davis (So., All-County), S/D Mikalya Hinnant (Jr.) Key personnel losses: Boys — D Jereamy Hall (All-County), D Josh Hall, J Herb Wakefield, J Malik Robinson (All-County); Girls — S/R Kiara Parker (All-SMAC MOP, All-County AOY) Strengths: After claiming the state title in indoor season, Westlake’s boys team is striving for a second straight outdoor title and will feature a lot of experienced athletes in the sprints and relay events. After a strong postseason last spring, the girls will also be strong in the sprinting and relay events. According to Shook, this season the teams are striving to be more like a family. Weaknesses: The Wolverines will focus on gradually getting better as the dual meet regular season goes on and is focused on peaking by the postseason meets and not dwell on the past. The boys will be focusing on the championship season, while the girls have potential, but will be in the rebuilding phase.
