La Plata’s Butler has memorable wrestling season

It has been nearly a month since Cameron Butler captured the Class 2A-1A state championsh­ip at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro in the 120-pound final with a 4-0 decision over Kyle Farace of Oakland Mills, one of only two state championsh­ips won by Southern Maryland Athletic Conference wrestlers this season.

For his efforts, Butler, an All-SMAC first-team selection, was named this year’s wrestling Athlete of the Year in Charles County.

While reflecting on finally finishing atop the state’s wrestling podium to end his high school career, the La Plata senior will never forget how tough the road to the championsh­ip has been leading up
