SMECO nominating committee to meet
Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative’s (SMECO) Board of Directors appointed nine members to the 2016 Nominating Committee scheduled to meet on Saturday, May 7, at SMECO’s Executive Building in Hughesville. This committee will select a slate of candidates for the five available board positions to be elected at SMECO’s 2016 annual members’ meeting. Elections will be held to fill one position in Calvert County, two positions in Charles County, one in Prince George’s County, and one in St. Mary’s County.
The 2016 Nominating Committee members are Terence N. Gibson of Prince Frederick; Joseph L. Gardiner Jr. of La Plata, Edward Holland III of Waldorf, and William B. Young Jr. of Waldorf; Manning Clagett of Accokeek, and Ernest H. Riess of Brandywine; Edith M. Bell of Chaptico, George A. Brown of Loveville and Catherine Brenda Coates of Lexington Park.
SMECO customer-members interested in being nominated should complete a Board of Directors Candidate Application. Completed candidate applications should be submitted to SMECO, Attention: Joseph Densford, Board Attorney, by Friday, April 29. Applications may be mailed to P.O. Box 1937, Hughesville, MD 20637, or delivered to Terrie Krupitzer at 15035 Burnt Store Road in Hughesville.
In addition to nominations made by the committee, any 15 or more SMECO members acting together may make other nominations by petition by Friday, June 24. Members running by petition should also complete and submit a Board of Directors candidate application. Nominations will be posted in each SMECO office and mailed to each member with the Annual Meeting notice.
SMECO’s Annual Meeting will be held Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Regency Furniture Blue Crabs Stadium in Waldorf. Absentee mail-in voting will be available to customer-members who are unable to attend the meeting. Customers may request an absentee mail-in ballot beginning July 25 by calling 1-888-440-3311 or by going to SMECO’s website at www.smeco.coop. More information will be published in the Cooperative’s monthly newsletter.
Selection of the nominating committee members is in compliance with SMECO’s bylaws. For more information regarding the committee, nominations, and qualifications of directors, refer to Article IV, Sections 4.02 and 4.03, of SMECO’s bylaws. Commission for Women gala ticket sales continue through Friday
There is less than a week left to purchase tickets to the Charles County Commission for Women’s 20th Anniversary Gala event on Saturday, April 23. A limited number of tickets are available for purchase online at www.CharlesCountyMD.gov/CCCW/Gala through April 15. Individual tickets are $55 per person, and tables of 10 are available for $475 each.
More than 50 distinguished Charles County women honorees received nominations for the Trailblazers Award. Winners in each award category will be announced during the April 23 event.

State police to conduct child safety seat check
The Maryland State Police La Plata Barrack in partnership with University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, La Plata Town Police, Walmart and Maryland Kids in Safety Seats (KISS) are conducting a free child safety seat check on April 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Walmart in La Plata, located at 40 Drury Drive.
Attending a car seat check is a great way to determine if a child safety seat is installed correctly. Child passenger safety technicians will be on hand to educate and assist parents, caregivers or day care provider’s information to keep children safe while in transport or in the event of a crash.

Community Bank calls for artists
Community Bank of the Chesapeake, in partnership with the Charles County Art Alliance, is accepting submissions for their third art show, a multi-media exhibit, to be held at the main Waldorf branch, 3035 Leonardtown Road, Waldorf, from May 20 to Aug. 19.
Local artists are invited to submit a maximum of two works of art for consideration at no cost. Artwork entries must be submitted electronically as digital images (jpegs) attached to an email sent to firstname.lastname@example.org. Reference “Community Bank Gallery” in the subject line.
The email must include the artist’s name, mailing address, email address, phone number, biography (half-page max, in Microsoft Word), headshot, title of artwork, medium and materials used, size and dimensions, the year it was created and price if applicable.
