SMECO nom­i­nat­ing com­mit­tee to meet

South­ern Mary­land Elec­tric Co­op­er­a­tive’s (SMECO) Board of Di­rec­tors ap­pointed nine mem­bers to the 2016 Nom­i­nat­ing Com­mit­tee sched­uled to meet on Satur­day, May 7, at SMECO’s Ex­ec­u­tive Build­ing in Hugh­esville. This com­mit­tee will select a slate of can­di­dates for the five avail­able board po­si­tions to be elected at SMECO’s 2016 an­nual mem­bers’ meet­ing. Elec­tions will be held to fill one po­si­tion in Calvert County, two po­si­tions in Charles County, one in Prince Ge­orge’s County, and one in St. Mary’s County.

The 2016 Nom­i­nat­ing Com­mit­tee mem­bers are Ter­ence N. Gib­son of Prince Fred­er­ick; Joseph L. Gar­diner Jr. of La Plata, Ed­ward Hol­land III of Wal­dorf, and Wil­liam B. Young Jr. of Wal­dorf; Man­ning Clagett of Ac­co­keek, and Ernest H. Riess of Brandy­wine; Edith M. Bell of Chap­tico, Ge­orge A. Brown of Loveville and Cather­ine Brenda Coates of Lex­ing­ton Park.

SMECO cus­tomer-mem­bers in­ter­ested in be­ing nom­i­nated should com­plete a Board of Di­rec­tors Can­di­date Ap­pli­ca­tion. In ad­di­tion to nom­i­na­tions made by the com­mit­tee, any 15 or more SMECO mem­bers act­ing to­gether may make other nom­i­na­tions by pe­ti­tion by Fri­day, June 24. Mem­bers run­ning by pe­ti­tion should also com­plete and sub­mit a Board of Di­rec­tors can­di­date ap­pli­ca­tion. Nom­i­na­tions will be posted in each SMECO of­fice and mailed to each mem­ber with the An­nual Meet­ing no­tice.

SMECO’s An­nual Meet­ing will be held Tues­day, Aug. 23, at Re­gency Fur­ni­ture Blue Crabs Sta­dium in Wal­dorf. Ab­sen­tee mail-in vot­ing will be avail­able to cus­tomer-mem­bers who are un­able to at­tend the meet­ing. Com­mis­sion for Women gala ticket sales con­tinue through Fri­day

There is less than a week left to pur­chase tick­ets to the Charles County Com­mis­sion for Women’s 20th An­niver­sary Gala event on Satur­day, April 23. A lim­ited num­ber of tick­ets are avail­able for pur­chase on­line at www.CharlesCoun­ through April 15. In­di­vid­ual tick­ets are $55 per per­son, and ta­bles of 10 are avail­able for $475 each.

More than 50 dis­tin­guished Charles County women hon­orees re­ceived nom­i­na­tions for the Trail­blaz­ers Award. Win­ners in each award cat­e­gory will be an­nounced dur­ing the April 23 event.

State po­lice to con­duct child safety seat check

The Mary­land State Po­lice La Plata Bar­rack in part­ner­ship with Univer­sity of Mary­land Charles Re­gional Med­i­cal Cen­ter, La Plata Town Po­lice, Wal­mart and Mary­land Kids in Safety Seats (KISS) are con­duct­ing a free child safety seat check on April 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Wal­mart in La Plata, lo­cated at 40 Drury Drive.

At­tend­ing a car seat check is a great way to de­ter­mine if a child safety seat is in­stalled cor­rectly. Child pas­sen­ger safety tech­ni­cians will be on hand to ed­u­cate and as­sist par­ents, care­givers or day care provider’s in­for­ma­tion to keep chil­dren safe while in trans­port or in the event of a crash.

Com­mu­nity Bank calls for artists

Com­mu­nity Bank of the Ch­e­sa­peake, in part­ner­ship with the Charles County Art Al­liance, is ac­cept­ing sub­mis­sions for their third art show, a multi-me­dia ex­hibit, to be held at the main Wal­dorf branch, 3035 Leonard­town Road, Wal­dorf, from May 20 to Aug. 19.

Lo­cal artists are in­vited to sub­mit a max­i­mum of two works of art for con­sid­er­a­tion at no cost. Art­work en­tries must be sub­mit­ted elec­tron­i­cally as dig­i­tal images (jpegs) at­tached to an email sent to wal­dor­fwest­ Ref­er­ence “Com­mu­nity Bank Gallery” in the sub­ject line.

The email must in­clude the artist’s name, mail­ing ad­dress, email ad­dress, phone num­ber, bi­og­ra­phy (half-page max, in Mi­crosoft Word), head­shot, ti­tle of art­work, medium and ma­te­ri­als used, size and di­men­sions, the year it was cre­ated and price if ap­pli­ca­ble.
