Maryland International Raceway 2015 track champions were crowned on Feb. 13 during the awards presentation and racer party at the Waldorf Jaycees Community Center.

The first awards winners of the evening were handed to MDIR’s “Employee Recognition of Excellence: Zechary Windsor of Upper Marlboro and Richard Lacey of Mechanicsville. Windsor is a member of the track’s racer technical department and staging lanes while Lacey provides EMT/ fire and rescue service both on race days as well as track rentals.

Next up was the Raider ET Challenge champions to come to the stage. The first winner recognized was Jr. Dragster champion Allison Lloyd of Doswell, Va. Also honored with their Raider championships were Steve Witherow of Sumerduck, Va., in Top ET and Chris Moren of Richmond, Va., in Mod ET. For Witherow, it was his third title in four years while for Moren it was his first.

Andrew Mattingly of Waldorf was presented with the Speed Unlimited Midnight Madness grand champion trophy and jacket. A fun bit of trivia with Mattingly was shared with the crowd. He has kept every time slip since his first pass at MDIR in 1996, now totalinf over 4,200 and growing.

MDIR’s special event radial class winners were on deck next. Steve Willingham of La Plata was recognized as the Outlaw Drag Radial winner, while Ron Rhodes of Townsend, Del., took home his second consecutive honor in X275.

The final group to the stage Saturday was the 2015 Speed Unlimited ET Series track champions. Fourteen-year-old AJ Jenkins of Mechanicsville, Maryland was announced as the Hubble Motorsports Jr. Dragster champion, while Mike Schulz of Manassas Park, Va., claimed his second trophy in Motorcycle ET in three years. Bobby Mattera of Waldorf was presented with his first championship trophy in Mod ET and Wesley Washington Jr. of King George, Va., claimed his third title and first since 2007 in Top ET.

In addition to the awards ceremony, the racer party also included cocktails, formal dinner, 50/50 drawing, door prizes and trivia contest, games, live music and dancing. It was a fun evening for all and a great way to celebrate the 2015 season and turn the page to the 2016 schedule just around the corner.

“We are thankful for the opportunity to honor all of our great racers at this banquet each year,” said Rick Lindner, director of marketing and PR at MDIR. “We appreciate the longtime support from our sportsman racers and this evening is always a way to show that appreciation.”

The MDIR season kicks off March 5 and 6 with Test & Tune for the month of March. The 2016 Speed Unlimited ET Series starts on April 1 and the Speed Unlimited Midnight Madness series starts on April 8. MDIR will also host special Quad 5K Top ET on Aug. 5 to 7 and Sept. 9 to 11 as well as 5K Top ET events Sept. 23 and 24 during the 31st annual Snap-On Tools Superchargers Showdown.

The first special event of the season is the eighth annual Haltech Door Wars event presented by Winegardner Auto Group on April 15 to 17. For more information, go to www.RaceMDIR.com.
