Article highlighted diversity of America

Maryland Independent - - Community Forum -

My compliments to Rick Boyd and Southern Maryland Newspapers for your very sensitive, engaging, and insightful profile of our Muslim community and the unfortunate challenges with which they must cope as tragic world events continue to unfold [“Islam in Southern Maryland,” Maryland Independent, March 4].

We need only look to our history as a country to understand that hostility towards ethnic, religious, and racial segments of our population are both reprehensible and deeply regretted in time. Consider the episodes of hate and discrimination toward American Indians, African-Americans, Irish Catholics (my heritage), and Japanese Americans, to name only a few. Let us not add Muslims to this ugly legacy.

We should celebrate the formidable strength inherent in our diversity that continues to contribute to our success as a nation, one respected above all as a land of inclusion.
