St­ef­fens to be hon­ored at schol­ar­ship break­fast at East Carolina Univ.

Hope St­ef­fens of La Plata will be hon­ored by the East Carolina Alumni As­so­ci­a­tion at a schol­ar­ship break­fast re­cep­tion to be held April 30 at East Carolina Uni­ver­sity. St­ef­fens was named 2016-17 re­cip­i­ent of the David ’75 & Gail En­glert Schol­ar­ship and will be awarded $2,000 by the alumni as­so­ci­a­tion. El­i­gi­ble stu­dents must be full-time un­der­grad­u­ates with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and a record of lead­er­ship and ser­vice on campus and in the com­mu­nity. St­ef­fens is ma­jor­ing in theatre arts and his­tory.

Lo­cal stu­dents in­ducted into Phi Kappa Phi

The fol­low­ing lo­cal stu­dents were re­cently ini­ti­ated into The Honor So­ci­ety of Phi Kappa Phi, the na­tion’s old­est and most se­lec­tive col­le­giate honor so­ci­ety for all aca­demic dis­ci­plines. Mem­ber­ship is by in­vi­ta­tion and re­quires nom­i­na­tion and ap­proval by a chap­ter. Only the top 10 per­cent of se­niors and 7.5 per­cent of ju­niors, hav­ing at least 72 se­mes­ter hours, are el­i­gi­ble for mem­ber­ship. Grad­u­ate stu­dents in the top 10 per­cent of the num­ber of can­di­dates for grad­u­ate de­grees may also qual­ify.

Shayna Cole­man of Wal­dorf, mem­ber of the un­de­feated Mount St. Mary’s Uni­ver­sity women’s rugby team, will com­pete in the Na­tional Small Col­lege Rugby Or­ga­ni­za­tion Sweet 16 Tour­na­ment. The tour­na­ment took place the week­end of April 30 in Char­lotte, N.C.

Kitts, But­ler re­ceive Duke of Ed­in­burgh Awards at McDaniel

Maria Co­la­ciello of Wal­dorf re­ceived one of two Wil­liam Court­ney and John “Jack” Wright, Sr. Memo­rial Schol­ar­ships awarded in the Mid-At­lantic re­gion by the In­sti­tute of Man­age­ment Ac­coun­tants (IMA). She was re­cently in­ducted into the IMA ac­count­ing honor so­ci­ety and is a mem­ber of Sigma Zeta and Delta Ep­silon Sigma honor so­ci­eties.

Co­la­ciello is a se­nior math­e­mat­ics and busi­ness dou­ble ma­jor at King’s Col­lege, Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and a dean’s list stu­dent.

She is the daugh­ter of An­thony and Lenore Co­la­ciello.

The Court­ney and Wright

Re­becca Olsen of Brandy­wine was rec­og­nized April 20 at the ROTC Pres­i­dent’s Re­view held at McDaniel Col­lege. She re­ceived the Daugh­ters of Founders and Pa­tri­ots of Amer­ica Award.

Olsen, a sopho­more at McDaniel Col­lege, trans­ferred to the col­lege af­ter her fresh­man year at UMBC while in the ROTC Blue Jay Bat­tal­ion.

Steins­berger per­forms as part of The Madri­gal Singers at McDaniel

Lau­rissa Steins­berger of Wal­dorf per­formed May 2 as part of The

Oluwa­tobi Ogun­niyi of Wal­dorf was in­ducted March 24 into the Na­tional English Honor So­ci­ety. He is a sopho­more at Ran­dolph-Ma­con Academy.

Ogun­niyi is the son of Brid­get Emordi of Wal­dorf and O. Jimmy Ogun­niyi of Lau­rel.

Jamieson, Brewer per­form in Gospel Choir Con­cert at McDaniel

Ch­es­ney Jamieson of Port Tobacco and Sierra Brewer of White Plains per­formed in the Gospel Choir Con­cert held May 7 in WMC Alumni Hall at McDaniel Col­lege in West­min­ster.

Jamieson is a se­nior at McDaniel Col­lege.
