South­ern Mary­land films re­turn to Leonard­town

The South­ern Mary- land Film Fes­ti­val will kick off with a film­mak­ers re­cep­tion at 6 p.m. Fri­day, July 15, on the cam­pus of St. Mary’s Ryken High School in Leonard­town. Tick­ethold­ers will be able to at­tend a panel dis­cus­sion on the nuts and bolts of film­mak­ing in Mary­land fea­tur­ing Jack Gerbes of the Mary­land Film Of­fice. A re­cep­tion will fol­low at 7 p.m. with a chance for at­ten­dees to meet this year’s fes­ti­val film­mak­ers. A cer­e­mony rec­og­niz­ing this year’s jury-nom­i­nated films and award­ing the first-ever Fes­ti­val Jur y Prize.

The fes­ti­val con­tin­ues in Leonard­town 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Satur­day, July 16. More than 40 films pro­duced by lo­cal film­mak­ers will be shown in five lo­ca­tions through­out town: Big Larry’s Eatery, The Rex, Ye Olde Towne Café, The Leonard­town Arts Cen­ter and Opal Fine Art Gallery & Gifts. Th­ese films rep­re­sent a va­ri­ety of gen­res — mu­sic, com­edy, doc­u­men­tary and drama — and range in length and sub­ject mat­ter.

Three work­shops will be hosted by Yel­low Door Art Stu­dios. Early-bird work­shops on Tools for the Be­gin­ning Film­maker and Cre­at­ing Movie Mon­sters with Makeup will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Satur­day. An af­ter­noon work­shop on an­i­ma­tion will be held from 1-2 p.m.

An all-in­clu­sive ticket in­cludes ac­cess to all Fri­day night events, as well as all movie venues and work­shops on Satur­day. Tick­ets may be pur­chased at www. smdff.org. Ad­vanced tick­ets for the full day are $25 for adults, $15 for chil­dren un­der 12. Half-day tick­ets for Satur­day are also avail­able for $12 for adults and $7 for chil­dren.

Same day ticket sales will be cash only at the Box Of­fice on the Square. Tick­ets to Fri­day night’s re­cep­tion are $10 for all ages. All-day tick­ets for Satur­day are $25 for adults and $15 for chil­dren. Half-day morn­ing or af­ter­noon tick­ets will be $15 for adults and $10 for chil­dren. Half-day ticket hold­ers will not be able to see all movies. Park­ing is free through­out the town.
