Southern Maryland films return to Leonardtown
The Southern Mary- land Film Festival will kick off with a filmmakers reception at 6 p.m. Friday, July 15, on the campus of St. Mary’s Ryken High School in Leonardtown. Ticketholders will be able to attend a panel discussion on the nuts and bolts of filmmaking in Maryland featuring Jack Gerbes of the Maryland Film Office. A reception will follow at 7 p.m. with a chance for attendees to meet this year’s festival filmmakers. A ceremony recognizing this year’s jury-nominated films and awarding the first-ever Festival Jur y Prize.
The festival continues in Leonardtown 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 16. More than 40 films produced by local filmmakers will be shown in five locations throughout town: Big Larry’s Eatery, The Rex, Ye Olde Towne Café, The Leonardtown Arts Center and Opal Fine Art Gallery & Gifts. These films represent a variety of genres — music, comedy, documentary and drama — and range in length and subject matter.
Three workshops will be hosted by Yellow Door Art Studios. Early-bird workshops on Tools for the Beginning Filmmaker and Creating Movie Monsters with Makeup will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday. An afternoon workshop on animation will be held from 1-2 p.m.
An all-inclusive ticket includes access to all Friday night events, as well as all movie venues and workshops on Saturday. Tickets may be purchased at www. smdff.org. Advanced tickets for the full day are $25 for adults, $15 for children under 12. Half-day tickets for Saturday are also available for $12 for adults and $7 for children.
Same day ticket sales will be cash only at the Box Office on the Square. Tickets to Friday night’s reception are $10 for all ages. All-day tickets for Saturday are $25 for adults and $15 for children. Half-day morning or afternoon tickets will be $15 for adults and $10 for children. Half-day ticket holders will not be able to see all movies. Parking is free throughout the town.
