For Hughesville Little League the weekend couldn’t have ended any better.

On Saturday night. Hughesville’s senior AllStar softball team wrapped up the District 7 tournament championship with a convincing 21-7 victory in five innings over Northern Calvert Little League at Oak Ridge Park in Hughesville.

Hughesville shut out Northern Calvert 10-0 earlier Saturday to kick off the two-team district tournament. The Hughesville senior squad, which claimed its second straight district crown, will travel to Hurlock for the state tournament and face the District 6 representative at Hurlock Sports Complex on July 9 to 14.

“I’m very excited to be able to get another shot at states,” said Hughesville manager Mike Gowin, whose team boasted eight returning players from last season. “Last year we lost in the [state tournament] semifinals and the girls were disappointed which motivated them this season. All of these girls are very good ball players. Entire team has played either high school or travel ball. They all have an understanding of the game.”

In the first game, Hughesville

scored seven runs in the first three innings to put the game away early. It finished with 10 hits, four of which were for extra bases.

Hughesville starter Angela Rogers picked up the victory on the rubber, going six innings with four strikeouts, allowing just four hits with one walk. She threw a total of 76 pitches, 46 for strikes.

In the championship game, Hughesville exploded with 15 runs in the first three innings en route to the win.

Mitchell delivered with the win on the rubber. She pitched all five innings and struck four batters while allowing five earned runs on five hits with nine walks.

Hughesville, which had 17 hits in the contest, was led by Hands, who finished 4 for 5 at the plate with four runs driven in and three runs scored. She also had two doubles and a triple in the game.

Wathen finished with three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored, while Brianna Lee also delivered with three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Mitchell had two hits and an RBI with four runs scored, also walking three times. Peyton Gowin added two hits with three RBIs and Megan Martin also had two hits with two RBIs and three runs scored.

“We were able to jump out early and put the pressure on Calvert,” said Gowin. “In the second game we hit the ball very well with multiple doubles and triples. The girls played very hard and I’m very proud of the way they performed in the district tournament.”
