Man charged with sex abuse
Allegedly recorded minor during shower
A La Plata man was arrested Tuesday after being accused of using a hidden camera to record a 14-year-old girl as she showered, court records show.
Charged with sexually abusing a minor and conducting sur- veillance with prurient intent, Bryan Fredrick Simanton, 36, was in custody as of press time Thursday, awaiting a bail review hearing.
On June 28, the girl and her aunt reported the allegations to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office. The girl told police that during the early morning hours, she was next to Simanton on a couch watching a movie when he grabbed her hand and allegedly made her touch him inappropriately before she pulled her hand away, according to charging documents. The girl then went upstairs into a bedroom, talking to a friend on the phone, when she heard some- thing in the hallway. When she opened the door to see what the noise was, she allegedly saw Simanton who appeared to be touching his genitals with a hand down his pants.
Upon seeing her, Simanton went into another room, and the girl woke up her aunt. They left together to go to a hotel. The aunt returned to the house later and retrieved Simanton’s cell phone, which reportedly contained two pictures and a video of the girl while she showered, court records indicate.
After they reported the incident to police, officers arrested Simanton who later told investigators that he “secretly placed a nanny camera in a bathroom to record [the girl] while in the bathroom and taking a shower,” charging documents state. “… He then viewed the recordings and live video via his cellular telephone,” he told police.
A preliminary hearing date is pending.
