Leonard­town win­ery re­leases wine­maker’s first batch

Port of Leonard­town Win­ery and the South­ern Mary­land Wine Grower’s Co­op­er­a­tive re­cently an­nounced the re­lease of 2015 Vi­dala­cato by South­ern Mary­land’s new­est wine­maker, Lau­ren Y. Zim­mer­man’s.

Zim­mer­man’s knowl­edge of wine­mak­ing be­gan in a small wine re­gion in Prince Ed­ward County in On­tario, Canada, ac­cord­ing to a press re­lease. She worked in vine­yards while still at­tend­ing high school.

Zim­mer­man stud­ied wine­mak­ing and viti­cul­ture in Ni­a­gara Falls, On­tario; and has worked un­der wine­mak­ers in North Amer­ica and New Zealand. She has also owned a small vine­yard in On­tario. She is mem­ber of the Mary­land Wine As­so­ci­a­tion and has worked with sev­eral area winer­ies prior to be­com­ing Port of Leonard­town Win­ery’s wine­maker.

The 2015 Vi­dala­cato is a “so­phis­ti­cated sweet white wine made from 100 per­cent Vi­dal Blanc grapes” and is be­ing re­leased just in time for sum­mer, ac­cord­ing to a press re­lease. Aged and fer­mented in stain­less to pre­serve the nat­u­rally oc­cur­ring fruity char­ac­ter­is­tics of or­ange, nec­tarine and peach, with no added sugar, the Vi­dala­cato is tech­ni­cally a Friz­zante.

In 2015, the win­ery’s 2014 Vi­dala­cato sold out in less than three months. This year, Port of Leonard­town bot­tled twice as much hop­ing to keep it in stock through­out sum­mer.
