Leonardtown winery releases winemaker’s first batch
Port of Leonardtown Winery and the Southern Maryland Wine Grower’s Cooperative recently announced the release of 2015 Vidalacato by Southern Maryland’s newest winemaker, Lauren Y. Zimmerman’s.
Zimmerman’s knowledge of winemaking began in a small wine region in Prince Edward County in Ontario, Canada, according to a press release. She worked in vineyards while still attending high school.
Zimmerman studied winemaking and viticulture in Niagara Falls, Ontario; and has worked under winemakers in North America and New Zealand. She has also owned a small vineyard in Ontario. She is member of the Maryland Wine Association and has worked with several area wineries prior to becoming Port of Leonardtown Winery’s winemaker.
The 2015 Vidalacato is a “sophisticated sweet white wine made from 100 percent Vidal Blanc grapes” and is being released just in time for summer, according to a press release. Aged and fermented in stainless to preserve the naturally occurring fruity characteristics of orange, nectarine and peach, with no added sugar, the Vidalacato is technically a Frizzante.
In 2015, the winery’s 2014 Vidalacato sold out in less than three months. This year, Port of Leonardtown bottled twice as much hoping to keep it in stock throughout summer.
